Prepare to be captivated by the explosive revelations in "New Confessions of an Economic Hitman" as John Perkins, a former economic hitman himself, unveils the shocking extent of global corruption and its impact on countries around the world. In this gripping book, Perkins not only exposes the deep-rooted cancer of economic manipulation but also provides a glimmer of hope by outlining actionable steps to dismantle this destructive system. This book was introduced to me because of the class I teach, AP Human Geography, and its relevance to subject matters in the course. I found it an extremely thought-provoking journey into the heart of corporatocracy and the far-reaching consequences it has on business, government, and society.
John Perkins, an accomplished economist, and author, draws from his firsthand experiences as an economic hitman to present a compelling and credible tale of what he witnessed in his time on the job. With his extensive background advising prestigious institutions such as the World Bank, United Nations, IMF, and the US Treasury Department, Perkins possesses unparalleled insights into the inner workings of the global economic system. His expertise and courage to expose the truth make him a trusted voice in the field, however, his thoughts are not accepted by many other leading figures, for various reasons.
"New Confessions of an Economic Hitman" unveils the covert tactics employed by economic hitmen to deceive nations and siphon trillions of dollars from their economies. Perkins reveals how the devastating influence of economic hitmen has spread, permeating not only developing nations but also the United States itself. These EHMs, serving as shock troops for the corporatocracy, maintain the corrupt status quo through nonviolent coercion. And when their tactics fail, the jackal assassins emerge to enforce compliance, employing threats, bribes, assassinations, and unbridled military power. At the heart of this book lies a new section, spanning over 100 pages, that exposes the alarming reality of the contemporary global landscape. Originally, The Confessions of an Economic Hitman was released in 2004 and this is a new adaptation where Perkins shines a light on the exponential increase in the utilization of EHM and jackal tools—false economics, false promises, debt, deception, coups, and more. The extensive new material takes readers on a journey across various countries, including Seychelles, Honduras, Ecuador, Libya, Turkey, Western Europe, Vietnam, China, and even the United States. Here, Perkins unveils the sinister development of new EHMs—bankers, lobbyists, and corporate executives—who manipulate governments and the public, perpetuating policies that exacerbate wealth inequality.

Amidst the darkness, Perkins does offer a glimmer of hope. The book concludes with a detailed and actionable list of steps that individuals can take to transform the failing Death Economy into a Life Economy. Perkins emphasizes the importance of collective action and provides a roadmap for each of us to contribute to sustainable abundance for all. By dismantling the existing system of economic manipulation, we can pave the way for a fairer and more equitable society.
"New Confessions of an Economic Hitman" is a gripping exposé that reveals the intricate web of deception woven by economic hitmen and the far-reaching consequences it holds. Perkins' insider perspective and credible insights shed light on the pervasive nature of corruption in our global economic system. Moreover, the book offers a blueprint for readers to join the movement toward a more just and sustainable world.
In conclusion, "New Confessions of an Economic Hitman" is a powerful and urgent call to action. Through compelling storytelling and a wealth of knowledge, Perkins confronts the dark realities of economic manipulation while providing hope for a better future. This book is an essential read for those seeking to understand and challenge the forces that perpetuate inequality and injustice on a global scale. However, because of the criticism that the original book and this new addition have faced, and my inability to verify much of this information, my overall rating is 3.5/5. It is a fantastic story that has sold over 1 million copies and has been translated into 32 different languages that intertwine sex, assassinations, and historical relevance to understanding our world today, but because most of us have never even heard of EHM's it's tough to determine just how much of it is all true.
